How much fragrance do wax melts need

Wax melts run a higher fragrance load than candles — typically 8–12%, versus the 6–10% used for container candles. Fragrance load is the percentage of fragrance oil relative to the weight of wax, not the total poured weight of the melt:

FO weight = wax weight × (FL% ÷ 100)
Example: 3 oz melt wax × 10% = 0.3 oz fragrance oil

Measuring by weight is the only reliable way to hit your load. Fragrance oils are denser than melted wax, so a "tablespoon" of oil weighs more than a tablespoon of wax — volume measurements drift batch to batch. Use a digital scale in ounces or grams. Why wax melts hold more fragrance than candles

The difference comes down to one thing: a wax melt is never lit. A candle's fragrance load is capped by the burn — too much oil clogs the wick, mushrooms the flame, and makes the candle soot and sweat. Everything about a candle's load is a compromise with the flame.

A wax melt has no wick and no flame. It sits on an electric or tea-light warmer and releases scent slowly as the wax warms. With nothing to clog and nothing to burn, the wax can safely carry more fragrance — which is exactly what you want, because the warmer never gets as hot as a candle's melt pool. Running melts at 8–12% instead of a candle's 6–10% is what gives them their signature strong, room-filling throw.

Clamshell vs mold pouring

Most sellers pour into six-cavity clamshells — the snap-apart plastic packaging customers break into single cubes. When you calculate for clamshells, "wax weight per unit" means the wax in one full clamshell, and the number of units is how many clamshells you are filling. A standard clamshell holds roughly 2.5–3 oz of wax.

Silicone and tin molds work the same way in the math — set "wax weight per unit" to the wax in a single mold and enter how many you are pouring. Because throw scales with the amount of wax melting at once, a heavier cube throws more than a thin one at the same percentage, so keep your cavity size consistent if you want repeatable results across a batch.

Add fragrance at the right temperature

Temperature matters as much as percentage. Add fragrance too hot and the volatile top notes flash off before you pour; too cold and the oil will not fully incorporate, leaving it to separate later. Add fragrance to soy melt wax at 180–185°F, paraffin melt wax at 195–200°F, and coconut-soy blends at 170–180°F, then stir gently for about two minutes so the oil disperses evenly.
