This calculator leads with the question most makers actually have: what percentage am I running? You already poured a candle — or you are following someone else's recipe — and you want to confirm the fragrance load rather than build a new one from scratch. Enter your wax weight and the fragrance oil weight, and the "Check My FL%" tab returns the exact percentage:

FL% = (FO weight ÷ wax weight) × 100
Example: 0.8 oz fragrance ÷ 8 oz wax × 100 = 10%

There is also a forward tab — Target FL% → FO weight — for when you do want to work the other direction and get the fragrance weight for a target percentage. But the default is the check, because verifying a load is the more common reason people reach for a fragrance-oil-percentage tool.

Reading your result

The calculator does not just return a number — it tells you what the number means for your wax. Every wax has a ceiling on how much fragrance it can hold, so the same 10% that is perfect for soy is well over the limit for beeswax. Your result is flagged as one of three states:

Is my fragrance load too high?

A load reads as "too high" the moment it passes the maximum for your wax — 10% for most soy, paraffin, and coconut container waxes, and 6% for beeswax. Above the ceiling, the extra oil is not doing what you hoped. It cannot bind into the wax, so it separates and sweats to the surface, saturates the wick, and frequently makes hot throw worse. If the calculator flags your recipe as over the limit, the fix is to reduce fragrance, not to add more wax to "dilute" it — though adding wax does work if you want to keep the same amount of fragrance and bring the percentage down.

Why measure against wax weight

Fragrance percentage is always the ratio of fragrance oil to wax, never to the total poured weight or the jar size. A candle with 8 oz of wax and 0.8 oz of fragrance is 10%, full stop. Calculating against total fill weight instead makes every recipe read lower than it truly is, which is how makers accidentally exceed their wax's limit while thinking they are safe. Measure both wax and fragrance by weight on a scale, and always divide by the wax.

How do I calculate fragrance oil percentage?

Divide the weight of fragrance oil by the weight of wax and multiply by 100: FL% = (FO ÷ wax) × 100. For example, 0.8 oz of fragrance in 8 oz of wax is 10%. Use wax weight, not total candle weight, and measure both by weight. The "Check My FL%" tab above does this for you.

What percentage is my candle running?

You need two numbers: the wax weight and the fragrance oil weight per candle. Percentage is fragrance divided by wax, times 100. 1 oz of fragrance in 1 pound (16 oz) of wax is 6.25%; 1.28 oz in that pound is 8%. The calculator returns the exact figure and whether it is within your wax's safe range.

Is my fragrance load too high?

Most container waxes cap at 10% and beeswax at 6%. If your percentage is above the maximum for your wax, it is too high — the wax cannot bind the excess, so it sweats, clogs the wick, and can reduce hot throw. The calculator flags your result as within range, approaching maximum, or over the limit.
