How much essential oil to use in candles
Essential oils are dosed the same way as fragrance oils — as a percentage of wax weight, in the 6–10% range — but with an important caveat: they usually throw weaker, so many makers run them near the top of that range. The formula is the same:
EO weight = wax weight × (EO% ÷ 100)
Example: 8 oz wax × 10% = 0.8 oz essential oil
Dose by weight, not by drops. Drop counts vary with oil viscosity and dropper size, and they make consistent batches impossible. Essential oils vs fragrance oils in candles
Synthetic fragrance oils are engineered for candles: they are formulated to bind with wax and release slowly and evenly from a warm melt pool. Essential oils are natural plant extracts that were never designed for that job. Two differences matter most for makers:
- Volatility. Essential oils are more volatile, so their bright top notes flash off faster — both while you pour and while the candle burns. A blend can smell different at the start of a burn than at the end.
- Binding and throw. Essential oils bind to wax less effectively than candle fragrance oils, so at the same percentage the scent throw is typically softer. That is not a mistake in your recipe — it is the nature of the material.
Add essential oils at the lowest safe temperature
Because their aromatic compounds are heat-sensitive, essential oils should be added at the lowest temperature your wax allows — around 180–185°F for soy, and cooler where you can. Essential oils also have their own flash points; adding them to wax that is too hot burns off the most delicate notes before the candle is poured, leaving a flatter scent. Stir gently and pour promptly once the oil is incorporated.
Which essential oils throw best in candles
Not all essential oils perform equally in wax. Heavier base notes — patchouli, cedarwood, vetiver, vanilla oleoresin, and other resinous or woody oils — anchor a blend and carry through a warm room far better than light oils. Bright top notes like citrus (lemon, sweet orange), eucalyptus, and mint smell wonderful cold but fade quickly once the candle is lit.
