How many wicks does my candle need?
Wick count comes down to the container's inner diameter. A single wick can only melt outward so far before the flame has to grow dangerously large to reach the wall. Past roughly 3.5 inches across, adding a second wick works better than sizing the first one up.

Treat these as starting points. Wax type, fragrance load and vessel material all shift where the line falls. The 3.5"–4.5" band is especially close to call: a 4-inch jar can work as a double-wick or as a single large wick, and the way to find out is to pour both and burn them side by side.
Why wicks need 1.5 inches between them
Two flames close together each heat the air the other is drawing on, so both burn hotter, taller and less steadily than they would alone. Below about 1.5 inches of center-to-center separation they start to lean toward each other and can merge into one large flame. That is what gives you a dangerously deep melt pool and a container hot enough to crack.
The 1.5-inch minimum is measured center to center, wick to wick, not between the edges of the melt pools. Treat it as a hard floor and leave margin on top of it: if your geometry lands at exactly 1.5 inches, everything else has to go perfectly. Aim for 2 inches or more where the vessel allows it.
The wall needs clearance too. A wick sitting too close to the glass scorches the container and leaves a sooty ring. Keep at least 0.75 inches from wick center to the wall. The R/2 rule below keeps you clear of this without any extra math.
How to position wicks evenly — the R/2 rule
The standard placement rule puts the wicks halfway between the center of the container and its outer edge. If R is the container's radius, every wick sits on a circle of radius R/2, spaced evenly around it.
Distance from center = R ÷ 2
Angle between wicks = 360° ÷ N
Wick-to-wick spacing = R × sin(180° ÷ N)
The third formula is the one that decides whether a wick count works. For a 5-inch jar (R = 2.5") with three wicks: 2.5 × sin(60°) = 2.17 inches between adjacent wicks, clear of the minimum. Four wicks in the same jar drops it to 2.5 × sin(45°) = 1.77 inches, which passes but is tighter. Five wicks gives 1.47 inches, which fails.
R/2 sits between two ways of getting it wrong. Push the wicks toward the center and the wax at the walls never melts, leaving a permanent ring of unused wax. Push them toward the wall and the glass overheats while the middle of the candle tunnels. Halfway gives each flame roughly the same amount of wax to work on in both directions.
Sizing each wick: the section diameter
Each wick in a multi-wick candle only has to melt its own share of the container. A 6-inch jar with three wicks behaves like three 2-inch candles sitting next to each other, and each wick should be sized for 2 inches rather than for 6.
Section diameter = container diameter ÷ wick count
Example: 6" jar ÷ 3 wicks = 2" section diameter per wick
Take that section diameter to a normal wick chart and size each wick for it. Sizing every wick for the full 6 inches overwicks the candle badly: three oversized flames, heavy soot, mushrooming, and a melt pool that gets dangerously deep within an hour. Single vs double vs triple wick — when to use each
Single wick is the default for anything under 3.5 inches, and it often still works a little past that line. One flame is easier to size, cheaper to produce, more forgiving of an imperfect pour, and burns more predictably in a drafty room. If a single wick reaches your walls, there is no reason to add a second.
Double wick suits the 3.5"–4.5" range, and vessels where a single wick would have to run hot to reach the edges. Two wicks also reach a full melt pool faster than one large wick, which helps if your customers burn in short sessions. They get through the wax faster too, so check the burn time calculator before you print a burn-hours claim on the label.
Triple wick is for 4.5 inches and up. Three flames in a triangle spread heat more evenly across a wide surface than two in a line, which is why most wide-vessel candles on shop shelves are triples. Below 4.5 inches, three wicks cannot clear the spacing minimum without crowding the wall.
Square and rectangular containers
Square vessels use the inner side length in place of the diameter, and the placement shifts from a circle to a grid. Two wicks go on the horizontal center line at the quarter-points; four go on a 2×2 grid, also at the quarter-points. Both put the wicks half the side length apart, the same separation the R/2 rule gives a round vessel of the same width.
Corners are the part to watch. Wax in a corner sits farther from every flame than wax at the middle of a wall, so square candles more often finish with unmelted corners. Size each wick slightly up compared with a round vessel of the same width, and burn-test for a full four hours before calling the corners a problem — many clear on the second or third burn once the melt pool memory is set.

How far apart should two wicks be in a candle?
At least 1.5 inches from wick center to wick center. In a round container, place both wicks on a circle halfway between the center and the wall — a radius of R/2. For a 4-inch jar that puts each wick 1 inch from the center and 2 inches apart, which clears the minimum comfortably.
How far apart should three wicks be?
Three wicks sit on the same R/2 circle, 120° apart. The center-to-center spacing works out to R × sin(60°), or about 0.866 × R. You need a radius of at least 1.73 inches — a 3.5-inch diameter — before three wicks clear the 1.5-inch minimum, though 5 to 6 inches is where three wicks start to burn well.
Can I put two wicks in a 3-inch jar?
No. A 3-inch container has a radius of 1.5 inches, so two wicks on the R/2 circle would sit exactly 1.5 inches apart with just 0.75 inches to the glass — right at the edge of both limits, with no margin for an imperfect pour. The accepted minimum diameter for multi-wicking is 3.5 inches. Below that, use one correctly sized wick.
Why did my multi-wick candle tunnel between the wicks?
Each wick is responsible for its own section of the vessel. If the wicks are undersized for their section diameter, each melts a small pool and the wax between them never liquefies. Divide the container diameter by the wick count, then size each wick for that figure — not for the full container diameter, which overwicks the candle badly.
How do you space wicks in a square container?
Two wicks go on the horizontal center line at the quarter-points, half the side length apart. Four go on a 2×2 grid at the quarter-points, also half the side length apart. Three wicks in a square vessel are placed on a circle a quarter of the side length from center, the same as a round container. Check against the inner side length, not the diagonal.
Is more wicks always better for scent throw?
No. More wicks means more flames, a hotter container and a faster burn — not automatically stronger hot throw. Overwicking produces soot, mushrooming and a melt pool that gets too deep too fast. Add wicks because the vessel is too wide for one wick to reach the walls, not because you want more scent.
