How strong do you want your candle to smell?

Scent strength comes down to one number: the percentage of fragrance oil relative to the weight of your wax. Rather than guess, pick the strength you want and let the calculator convert it to a weight:

These map to soy, paraffin, coconut, and coconut-soy waxes. Beeswax caps lower, at 6%, so its "strong" is closer to a medium on other waxes — the calculator flags it if you push past a wax's maximum.

More fragrance is not always a stronger candle

It is tempting to assume that doubling the fragrance doubles the scent. Inside the wax's range that roughly holds — more oil means more scent, particularly cold throw. But every wax has a ceiling on how much fragrance it can actually bind and release. Past that ceiling, the extra oil does not turn into scent. It separates and sweats to the surface, saturates and clogs the wick, and can make hot throw worse, not better. Chasing strength with ever more fragrance is the most common way makers end up with a weaker, poorly burning candle.

Cold throw vs hot throw

"How strong it smells" is really two questions, and they have different answers:

  • Cold throw — the scent from an unlit candle — scales fairly directly with fragrance load. If you want a jar that smells strong on the shelf, a higher percentage genuinely helps.
  • Hot throw — the scent while burning — is driven mostly by wick size, melt-pool depth, room size, and cure time. Beyond the wax's optimal range, adding fragrance does little for hot throw.

If a candle smells great cold but weak when lit, the fix is almost never more fragrance. Size the wick up so it melts the wax fully to the jar edge — the wick size calculator gives a starting point — and give the candle a proper cure before judging the scent.

Set the strength, then let it cure

Once you have chosen a strength and poured, cure time does much of the remaining work. Soy needs 1–2 weeks for fragrance to bond with the wax crystal structure before it throws its best; paraffin needs 2–3 days; beeswax 7–10 days. A candle tested a day after pouring will almost always under-perform its cured self — so decide your strength here, then give it time before you conclude it is too light or too strong. Frequently Asked Questions

What fragrance percentage makes a strong-smelling candle?

For most soy and coconut container candles, a strong scent means running near the top of the safe range — about 10% fragrance load (1.6 oz per pound). Around 8% reads as a solid medium, and 6% is light. Beeswax caps lower at 6%, so its "strong" is closer to other waxes' medium. Going above the wax maximum does not make a candle smell stronger.

Does adding more fragrance oil make a candle smell stronger?

Only up to a point. Within the wax's range, more fragrance increases scent — especially cold throw. But once you pass what the wax can bind, the extra oil separates and sweats, clogs the wick, and can actually reduce hot throw. Past the maximum, "more fragrance" and "stronger candle" stop being the same thing.

What is the difference between cold throw and hot throw?

Cold throw is the scent from an unlit candle; hot throw is what it fills a room with while burning. Cold throw scales with fragrance load. Hot throw depends more on wick size, melt-pool depth, room size, and cure time than on fragrance quantity — which is why a candle can smell strong cold and weak when lit.

Why does my candle smell strong cold but weak when burning?

That gap almost always points to the wick or the cure, not the percentage. An undersized wick makes a shallow melt pool that never reaches the jar edge, so most of the fragrance is never released. Under-curing does the same. Size the wick up and give the candle a full cure before deciding the scent is too weak.

How much fragrance oil per pound of wax for a medium scent?

A medium scent is about 8% fragrance load, roughly 1.28 oz per pound. The classic "1 oz per pound" starting point is 6.25%, at the lighter end. Fragrance load is a percentage of wax weight, not total candle weight, and should be measured by weight for consistent results.
